Wizard Island Photos
at Crater Lake National Park

These Wizard Island photos show a closeup view of the island and also shows views from the top of the caldera. They were taken when my wife and I took a boat tour that included a stop on the island. There is one Wizard Island tour in the morning that leaves at 9:55 and we took the afternoon tour that left at 1:00. The trip to Wizard Island took a half an hour and the stay on the island lasted 3 hours. The hike to the top of the caldera takes a little over an hour and the hike back to the boat dock takes about 45 minutes.

The trail to the top of the caldera is one mile in length and in most places is only about one foot wide. The trail contains a lot of loose rock so take a walking stick. We found that we slipped more coming down the caldera than going up.

The view at the top took our breath away and it gave us a unique view of the lake from the inside out. The caldera at the top is 90 feet deep and a trail leads to the bottom. Another trail encircles the rim and at every point there is a picturesque view. We ate our lunch at the top and the ground squirrel (below) came for a visit.

After hiking back down to the boat dock Dan had time for a swim in Crater Lake. The water was very cold and almost took his breath away. After drying off and resting a few minutes he jumped in again and enjoyed the water a little longer. Going for a swim will always be one of his most memorable memories! We hope you enjoy these photos and go for a visit for yourself some day.
